Re: Update
Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that Taiwan's bone marrow data bank has increased from the 20,000 or so donors in December of last year to around 40,000. I wish to thank those of you who have provided financial and logistic support for Tzu-Chi Foundation Bone Marrow Information Center's blood drives, in particular those corporations which have publicized this effort in corporate newsletters. You have each contributed to the growth of the data bank and a number of transplants have already been performed as a result of matching by the data bank!
In addition, my many months in the cancer ward of one of Taiwan's largest and most well-regarded hospitals has convinced me that cancer patients in Taiwan are surely in need of positive and sympathetic psychological support. The word "cancer” remains taboo and a recent newspaper report stated that almost 90% of family members of terminal cancer patients do not permit physicians to tell the patient the truth about their codition. My readings in this area suggest that one of the most important elements in a successful fight against cancer is the patient's will to live and the actions which the patient takes to manifest that will.
