Reading through various 'Stories of Dolly', I am so touched to know that she has made an impact on many peoples' lives with lasting impressions even 20 years later. When my mother passed away, I had only just turned five years old. At the time, I had no true concept of death nor the real meaning of life. As the years passed by, I grew older and slowly molded into who I am today; however, I have always felt that something was missing and that has remained unchanged throughout the course of my life. Although there is a small hole in my heart yearning for her presence, my mother has already given me unconditional love, strength and inspiration. Even without being physically here, she has taught me to be a strong independent woman and live life to the fullest. We all yearn for what we have lost, but sometimes, we forget what we have. Only when time is limited, do we truly appreciate how precious each day is.
This may sound funny but I'm so lucky that my mother had so many friends. From every recollection of their memories, I get to learn a bit more about her through their eyes and piece together who she is in mine. She will always be my ultimate role model and I can only hope that I will be more like her as I continue to grow. She pushed herself to succeed in all aspects of life and deeply cared for all those around her. As you all know, those are some pretty big shoes to fill!
Lastly, I would like to share a few words of wisdom from my mom, which she has written in a letter for me.
Never give in, never take "no" for an answer if you know you are right and can find the right solution. Fight for your future and be independent. Have confidence in your own will power and your abilities. Remember always that women are as good as men.
Do not feel threatened by or compete against others - simply set your own standards in life and strive to meet them. Remember that beauty is in the soul - kindness, compassion and selflessness are the true elements of beauty, not physical beauty.
Most importantly - learn to love life, enjoy your life, however long it is. Live life to its fullest, as I have always done.
Thank you all so much for planning this memorial and I look forward to spending more time with each one of you on the day of. I can't wait to hear more stories :)
